King Harvest Farm is online! Can you believe it?

2011 WNC Cooperative AG Extention Program Recipient: Steve and Terry King

We have diversified our operation away from total reliance on landscaping and ornamentals into the full-scale commercial production of fruits and vegetables, and are expanding our raspberry and asparagus production to meet the growing market need for locally grown products. We are purchasing plants and seeds, installing an irrigation system and developing a marketing strategy. Our project helps expand direct farm sales and raspberry production in the county and increases our farm's profitability. Our unique terraced growing system for raspberries has high potential for demonstration to other area growers.

King Harvest Farm provides a variety of naturally grown vegetables and berries as well as ornamental shrubs and trees. We are open to the public only for events or by appointment. Come spring, we aim to have regular hours and a farm stand!

Here's how to find local food:

* Visit the Local Food Guide and find participating grocery stores and restaurants, tailgate markets, CSAs, and businesses that buy local.

* Look for the Appalachian Grown label, a symbol displayed with farm products grown or raised in Western North Carolina and the southern Appalachian mountains.

* Ask restaurants where they get the food they serve and grocery stores where they get their produce. If it wasn't grown locally, let them know you value freshness, good taste and local family farms.
